Mailchimp is an email marketing service and a powerful tool for building campaigns. Campaigns are designed to help you market your products, brand, or services in the most effective way possible. But what exactly do we mean by ‘campaign’? In this article, let’s explore how Mailchimp makes creating campaigns as easy as A-B-C:
A – Create a list of subscribers who will receive certain types of messages from you (like promotions)
B – Choose which campaign type best suits your needs
C – Set up automated emails so that everything always happens at just the right time
Mailchimp allows users to create campaigns that are sent to non subscribers. The campaign is created by sending an email with a link in it. This process can be difficult and time consuming, so I made this article to teach you how to do it quickly. Read more in detail here: how to send mailchimp campaign to non subscribers.
In this module, we’ll develop two campaigns and send out two emails as a consequence. These campaigns will make use of Drag and Drop Templates created and saved in the Templates area. Under the segment headed Create Drag and Drop Template – Step-by-Step, one Template was built. In the Resulting Emails section, this Template will be utilized to create the email labeled Example A. We used a similar Drag and Drop design process to develop the second Template prior to the release of this tutorial. In the Resulting Emails section, this Template will be utilized to produce the email labeled Example B.
Click Campaigns from the Main Menu at the top of the page to start a new campaign. Then, in the top right of the page, click the Create Campaign button.
A modal dialogue box with a Search bar and the query “What do you want to create?” will appear. You may do one of the following things from here:
- Choosing a text-based button Allow us to assist you in making your decision.
- Choosing the Create an Email option
- Clicking the Create an Ad button
Click the Create an Email link for the purposes of this instruction.
Make sure Regular is chosen in the following box, titled Create an Email: Regular. In the textbox at the bottom of the page, type the name of the campaign. Name the campaign something that both you and your interoffice personnel will remember. Make the name unique to the communication’s purpose.
Campaign Builder Processes: Old vs. New
MailChimp is always working to improve its system in order to make it more efficient and effective for its users. MailChimp was in the midst of introducing a fresh, quicker method to send out Campaigns at the time this tutorial was written. You will be given the choice to finish your Campaign utilizing the Process of the Previous Campaign Builder or the Process for Creating a New Campaign, depending on your prior Campaign mode. If you’re brand new to MailChimp and the Process of the Previous Campaign Builder hasn’t been phased out yet, you’ll most likely be given the opportunity to switch to the Process for Creating a New Campaign after entering your Campaign Name. This tutorial shows how to send a campaign using either the Old or Process for Creating a New Campaign. Fill in your Campaign name to check whether you’ll be utilizing the Process of the Previous Campaign Builder or if you’ll have the opportunity to switch to the Process for Creating a New Campaign.
If you know which Campaign Builder you want to use or will use, go here.
Enter “New Promo – Org Listing with 2 Free Job Posts – 11072017” for the Process of the Previous Campaign Builder and for Resulting A Sample Email.
Select the gray Start button.
Enter “New Article Release – The Walls Have Eyes – 08082017” for the Process of the Previous Campaign Builder and for Resulting B) Email Example.
Select the gray Start button.
Enter “New Promo – Org Listing with 2 Free Job Posts – New Campaign Builder – 11092017” for the Process for Creating a New Campaign and Resulting A Sample Email.
Select the gray Start button.
This name is just for internal business usage and will not be visible outside of the workplace.
by the email’s Recipients/subscribers
“Who are you sending to?” comes on the following page. Using the Choose a list drop down, choose the Subscriber list. Below each list, take note of the number of subscribers.
Users who desire to switch to the Process for Creating a New Campaign may get a notification with a button to switch to the Process for Creating a New Campaign. If you want to use the New Campaign Builder instead, click the Switch Now button when provided with this choice. There’s a significant possibility you’re already utilizing the New Campaign Builder if you aren’t given the opportunity to switch. Users who move to the New Campaign Builder may switch back as long as MailChimp offers the option and hasn’t phased out the Old Campaign Builder. The email in the Ensuing Emails section of this chapter for Example A will be generated by the resulting campaign.
When the opportunity to switch to the new Campaign Builder is provided, click Switch Now.
Process of the Previous Campaign Builder
The MailChimp logo, the name of the New Campaign (New Promo – Org Listing with 2 Free Job Posts – 11072017 or New Article Release – The Walls Have Eyes – 08082017), a Help link, and a Save and Exit link are now shown in the header, from left to right. The footer lists all of the stages necessary to construct the Campaign, including the current Recipients phase. They are:
- Recipients
- Setup
- Template
- Design
- Confirm
In the footer, there is also a Next button. To get to the next step, click this button.
Step 1: Setup
Recipients
The website then offers three options:
- Complete list
- Prebuilt section or saved segment
- New section or group
For the purposes of this guide we will select Complete list and click the Next > button.
Setup
The Setup screen displays, requesting further Campaign information. From the Setup through the Confirm steps, you’ll notice the Back button in the footer, which allows you to return to the previous stage if necessary.
Email Title (Write a subject that piques the recipient’s interest in the benefits of reading the email.) Check for misspellings and grammatical mistakes.)
(Enter a Text preview that serves as a quick synopsis, piqueing the recipient’s curiosity in how reading the email might benefit them.) Check for misspellings and grammatical mistakes.)
From Name (For businesses, use a pattern such as First Name Last Name, Job Position, Company Name, or Web Address. For instance, John Doe, CEO of ABZ Company (or ABZ.com)
the sender’s Contact Information (This might be the recipient’s Contact Information or a group email with numerous users.) Keep in mind that as users respond to the eBlasts, someone must continue to monitor the Contact Informationes’ inboxes to ensure that all responses are recognized, responded to, or processed.)
Make the To Field Your Own: Recommendation: To avoid your emails being caught in your recipients’ spam filters, utilize MERGE fields for the First Name *|FNAME|* and Last Name *|LNAME|* in the To Field. The First Name is obtained by typing *|FNAME|* *|LNAME|* in the available textbox, and the Full Name is obtained by typing *|FNAME|* *|LNAME|* in the textbox.
Accept the following settings in the Tracking section:
- Opens with a checked value are tracked.
- Checked value for tracking clicks (required for Free accounts)
- With the Checked value, you may track plain-text clicks (required for Free accounts)
For Google Analytics, Ecommerce link tracking, Click-tale link tracking, and Salesforce link tracking, accept all other unchecked settings.
Accept the settings for social media and video conversion on the page to exclude them (ie unchecked values).
Connection on Social Media
Users of MailChimp may now publish postings to social media sites while sending email campaigns, in addition to using Cards Social.
Campaign web address
Prior to connecting our campaign to the Social Media platforms, let’s edit the Campaign web address to make it more user friendly. The Campaign web address is a reference to a web page created and hosted by MailChimp. It will be used when MailChimp posts users’ Campaign content to Social Media platforms or when a user would like to share the email’s content on line with any one regardless if they received the email or not. This URL will be redirected to, from the Social Media platforms and will display a page that contains the same content and similar layout included in the Campaign email that is sent to the Recipients. MailChimp allows you to change the page name part of the Campaign web address. From the Setup step, to edit the Campaign web address, click the edit link.
Example A of the Resulting Email let’s edit the Campaign web address.
The Edit Campaign web address dialogue box appears.
Let’s remove the auto number placed at the end of the Campaign web address. Save the file.
Upon clicking Save, the Campaign web address should now display without the auto number previously at the end the URL.
Example B of the Resulting Email let’s edit the Campaign web address.
The Edit Campaign web address dialogue box appears.
Let’s remove the auto number placed at the end of the Campaign web address. Save the file.
Upon clicking Save, the Campaign web address should now display without the auto number previously at the end of the URL.
Now let’s connect to the Social Media platforms which will link to the Campaign web address. MailChimp offers Social Media Auto post and Auto-tweet options for Facebook and Twitter that simultaneously post to these Social Media platforms upon sending Email Campaigns. In order to take advantage of the Social Media Auto Post option, you must configure MailChimp to use your Facebook or Twitter accounts by supplying the username and password credentials for the respective Social Media platform.
Click the Connect Twitter icon to join Twitter.
After inputting your Twitter credentials, click Authorize app.
Note Possible Navigation Error and Workaround: After connecting to a Social Media platform, Sometimes MailChimp’s Old Campaign Builder steps may redirect the user to a step beyond the Setup step used to connect to Social Media sites. If after entering the Twitter credentials, you are moved to a step beyond the Setup step, click the Setup step at the bottom of the Campaign Builder to navigate back to the Step 1: Setup
When you return to the Setup stage, you’ll see that the Twitter option has been changed to Auto-tweet campaign as [your Twitter account].
To alter the post message, tick the Twitter option.
Review the message in the Twitter textbox for accuracy and edit the message as needed. Note that the MERGE field tag *|URL|* references the Url which is represented by the Campaign web address link which links to a MailChimp hosted version of the Campaign Email.
You may link to Facebook to set up the Auto-post when you’ve completed evaluating and changing your Twitter message.
To connect to Facebook, click the Connect to Facebook icon in the Social media area to open the Facebook login page.
After entering your Facebook credentials, click Log In. Make sure [your Twitter handle] is still chosen for the Auto-tweet campaign.
To change the publishing profile or page and post a message, tick the Facebook option.
Review the message in the Facebook textbox for accuracy and edit the message as needed. Note for Facebook, the MERGE field tag *|URL|* reference will be added to your post text although it doesn’t show in the textbox. The Campaign web address links to a MailChimp hosted version of the Campaign Email. Finally, use the checkboxes below the textbox to choose the personal profile or a page to post from. For this example we will select High Income Source(Fan Page) in order to post to and post as the High Income Source Page.
Note: The video convert option is important if we’re embedding a video that can create problems in certain email clients. We don’t need to choose this option since we won’t be citing a video in this instruction. This option should be selected if we are referring to a video.
To continue to the Templates phase, click Next.
Templates
The title of the Templates stage is Choose a Template. Menu items include:
- Layouts
- Themes
- Campaigns Saved Templates
- Create your own.
Earlier from the Template instructions around creating a Template, we focused on the Drag and Drop option to create a Template. Alternatively we could have used the more advanced Create your own. option designed more for advanced users. These Templates once saved are accessible under the Saved Templates section.
Select Saved templates on the Choose a Template page.
Select the Template for this Campaign by clicking on the thumbnail of the Email you want to use.
To go to the Design stage, click Next. (As an alternative, double-click the thumbnail for the chosen Template to advance to the Design stage.)
Design
With the Design step, a page will display with the well-formatted email layout on the left but optional Content Blocks on the right that can be dragged to the left. If the Template was created using the more advanced HTML based Create your own. type, the editable HTML would appear on the right instead of the Drag and Drop Content Block controls.
Important: Regardless of the type of Template, Drag and drop or the Create your own., please make sure the format is in good shape (including testing in various email clients), there are no typos or grammar errors in the text, and all links point and make it to their expected target URL or the expected downloadable file. As a matter of quality, this review is very important, considering once the email is sent to your Recipients there is no way to retrieve it from their inboxes. So make sure the Email Template is as error free as possible to ensure your email’s primary message is received clearly. It’s quite possible that one typo may damage the message you are trying to convey and may create a negative impression of the email you are sending now or any you send in the future.
The formatted template comprises the following:
- The logo image content block refers back to HighIncomeSource.com.
- For the Header Image that connects to a Highlighted Article, use the Image Content Block.
- The email’s title and body are included in the text content block.
- Button Content Block with a link to a Featured Article
MailChimp has included a Preview and Test Dropdown at the top of the Template as a precaution. This link allows you to test the email without having to send it to the target recipients. To input the test email or emails, choose Preview and Test from the drop-down menu. This is an example of how a test may seem. There is an optional message text field that may be sent along with the test email.
The Test Email’s recipients may offer feedback by replying to the test email. The remarks of the test participants will also display in the comments tab. You may then continue with the next phases for the Email Campaign Launch, depending on your business procedures. Test emails are optional, although they may help discover mistakes that might otherwise go undetected. To finish the Test Email procedure, click Ok.
Note that the footers in the Template samples feature the closure with adjustable Drag and Drop built-in Social Media Follow Content Blocks. The footers also contain a MailChimp unsubscribe link, which is needed by MailChimp and the US Federal Trade Commission’s CAN- SPAM Act, which requires recipients of email solicitations from companies or organizations to be able to opt-out quickly and easily. Visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website at www.ftc.gov for additional information on the CAN-SPAM Act. The footer text and accompanying *|MERGE|* Fields are pre-populated when this Template is sent as part of our Email Campaign.
To continue to the Confirm stage, click Next.
Confirm
The “You’re all prepared to send!” message appears on the Confirm page. This page is provided by MailChimp to allow you to examine the Campaign before finishing it. It outlines the campaign’s key aspects and enables you to make any necessary changes before delivering the eBlast to the recipients.
Each element is shown in a list style with its current value and a gray Edit button that enables you to change it if necessary. Each row begins with a green check mark, indicating that each element has been completed. If the element requires your attention, a yellow warning Exclamation mark will appear.
The following are the elements and their current values:
- List
- Subject heading
- Text preview
- Replies (with current From name and From Contact Information)
- Tracking
- Social Media and Sharing
- Email in HTML
- Email in plaintext
- Cards Social
- Monkey pays out as an affiliate for a MailChimp link with a logo. MailChimp’s New Business Forever Free version requires it.)
In the bottom right corner of the Confirm step, notice the gray Schedule button next to the Send button. The Schedule option may be used to schedule Campaigns that you’ve prepared ahead of time but want to send at a later date. We’ll send our eBlast manually and in real-time for the sake of this article. As a consequence, the functionality of scheduling will not be provided. Visit www.mailchimp.com for additional information on campaign scheduling.
Example B of the Resulting Email we will not enable Cards Social and the Social Media Auto-post and Auto tweet features. After you’ve reviewed all the elements of your Campaign from the list, you are ready to complete the Campaign and send the eBlast. To proceed, click the Send button. Then skip ahead to the Campaign Send section to send your Campaign.
On the other hand, Example A of the Resulting Email we will enable Cards Social and the Social Media Auto-post and Auto tweet features. As a result, Continue on to the Cards Social section.
Cards Social
Now, let’s enable Cards Social. MailChimp created Cards Social to allow users the ability to easily integrate Email Campaigns into popular social media platforms. Cards Social are optional. Cards Social are digital representations of the content we include in our Campaign Emails. At the time this guide was written Cards Social were available on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Once configured properly, and the Campaign is sent with social media auto post enabled, Cards Social will appear in news feeds and on Social Media pages and can be easily shared amongst social media networks. Each Social Card may include a Title, Description and Image. A Social Card by default links back to a MailChimp hosted version of the Campaign Email being sent. Valid accounts on the respective social media platforms are required in order to take advantage of Cards Social.
To enable Cards Social, click the link titled Enable Cards Social to Make your campaign known..
On the Cards Social preview page Enable Customized Cards Social by clicking the toggle slide button under Cards Social Settings.
Notice the Social Card preview on the left and the configuration panel on the right. Notice the three Social Media platform tabs on the left for Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. For the purposes of this guide, we will configure and implement the Cards Social for Twitter and Facebook.
Using the Email Template connected with the Campaign, MailChimp estimates which picture to include. The title and description of your Social Card may be entered in the Title and Description text fields.
For Twitter and Facebook, neither of the picture approximations selected by MailChimp works well.
We created and uploaded a picture comparable to the second image with measurements of 477 px width and 245 px height previous to this chapter for the best post presentation of the image. This picture has been submitted into the Content Manager with the required width and height and is ready to be picked for our Social Card.
Note: The proportions that result in the optimal presentation for the Social Card picture may vary depending on the Social Media platform.
Click the upload an image link to pick the freshly uploaded picture with the right proportions.
The Content Manager appears on screen.
Choose the picture with the phrase Have a Company? as the first option. This picture looks a lot like the one we used in our email template. The first picture has the right measurements of 477 pixels wide by 245 pixels tall, which will look great in our Social Card on Twitter and Facebook. Now, in the upper right corner of the screen, click the Insert button.
Complete the Social Card’s Title and Description.
To finish customizing the Cards Social, click Save & Close. Cards Social is now enabled.
Again, Example B of the Resulting Email we will not auto post to Facebook or Twitter and will not enable Cards Social.
You’re ready to finish your Campaign and send the eBlast once you’ve evaluated all of the items from the list. To continue, press the Send button.
Please skip ahead to the Campaign Send section to send your Campaign using the Process of the Previous Campaign Builder.
Process for Creating a New Campaign
MailChimp is constantly improving its system to make it more efficient and effective for its end users. As an alternative to the Process of the Previous Campaign Builder above, the section below demonstrates how this new Campaign Builder can be used to Campaign Sends.
You should have landed here after switching to the new method of constructing Campaigns, or when MailChimp has phased out the old way of developing Campaigns and it is no longer accessible.
Upon navigating to the Create Campaign page in the New Campaign Builder you will notice the following page requiring Campaign setup information including To, From, Subject, Content, Connection on Social Medias, Settings, and Tracking.

Connection on Social Media
Users of MailChimp may now publish postings to social media sites while sending email campaigns, in addition to using Cards Social.
Campaign web address
Prior to connecting our campaign to the Social Media platforms, let’s edit the Campaign web address identified URL next to the Make your campaign known. label to make it more user friendly. The Campaign web address is a reference to a web page created and hosted by MailChimp. It will be used when MailChimp posts users’ Campaign content to Social Media platforms or when a user would like to share the email’s content on line with any one regardless if they received the email or not. This URL will be redirected to from the Social Media platforms and will display a page that contains the same content and similar layout included in the Campaign email that is sent to the Recipients. MailChimp allows you to change the page name part of the Campaign web address. From the Setup step, to edit the Campaign web address, click the Edit link.
The Edit Campaign web address dialogue box appears.
Let’s remove the auto number placed at the end of the Campaign web address. Save the file.
Upon clicking Save, the Campaign web address identified by the URL next to the Make your campaign known. label should now display without the auto number previously at the end of the URL.
Now let’s connect to the Social Media platforms, which will link to the Campaign web address.
Click the Connect Facebook icon to connect to Facebook.
After entering your Facebook credentials, click Log In.
To post, choose a Facebook personal profile or page.
To change the publishing profile or page and submit a message, use the link slider.
To post from a personal profile or a page, use the Select pages drop down menu. To post to, go to HighIncomeSource (Facebook Page) and post as High-Income Source.
The drowdown list now indicates that 1 item(s) has been chosen. Check the statement in the textbox for correctness and make any necessary changes. It’s worth noting that the MERGE field tag *|URL|* refers to the Url indicated by the Make your campaign known. link, which leads to a MailChimp-hosted version of the Campaign Email.
After you’ve completed modifying your Facebook message, click Save Message to save it, and then confirm the Company Page to publish to and post as.
Click the Authorize app button to connect to Twitter.
To alter the post message, use the link slider.
Check the statement in the textbox for correctness and make any necessary changes. It’s worth noting that the MERGE field tag *|URL|* refers to the Url indicated by the Make your campaign known. link, which leads to a MailChimp-hosted version of the Campaign Email.
To save your Twitter message when you’ve done modifying it, click Save Message.
Configuration and Monitoring
While building Campaigns using the New Campaign Builder, MailChimp provides a Configuration and Monitoring area with options that can be configured for each Campaign that is created. The current state of these options is displayed in this area with Edit links to change these options.
Settings
MailChimp has a Settings section where you may customize the parameters for each Campaign you create. A Forever Free account presently has two options that you may change. One enables you to customise the email’s To field, while the other is aimed to reduce mistakes caused by inappropriate video presentation if your email contains videos. Click the Edit link next to Settings to alter the Settings section.
Now check the Personalize the “To” field checkbox. Then choose the MERGE tag combination with the First Name and Last Name option. This usually results in higher Open and Click rates instead of the default Contact Information. Email clients and Recipients are less likely to perceive the email you send as spam when there is a personalized To line in the emails you send.
Because our email does not include a video, we will uncheck the Auto-convert video option. This option will scan your email for video tags and replace them with tags that are more suitable with most email clients, ensuring that the videos you attach are shown correctly. The third way to control responses using Conversations is only accessible for premium users, thus it will not be discussed in this article.
To save the settings, click Save.
The To field’s current status has changed to Your ‘To’ field is customised with merge tags.
Tracking
MailChimp has a Tracking section where you may set up parameters for each Campaign you create. A Forever Free account presently has 6 options that you may change. Click the Edit link next to Tracking to alter the section.
For all Tracking settings, we’ll use the defaults. Track opens, Track clicks, and Track plain text clicks are the presently chosen choices. The following alternatives need an active 3rd party account with an Ecommerce system, as well as Google Analytics, ClickTale, Salesforce, and Capsule. We won’t go through these integrations in detail in this article. Please visit www.mailchimp.com to learn more about these integrations and others.
To save the Tracking choices, click Save.
The defaults for the Tracking option should still be shown.
Confirm
The “Your email campaign is ready to send!” message appears on the Confirm page. This page is provided by MailChimp to allow you to examine the Campaign before finishing it. It outlines the campaign’s key aspects and enables you to make any necessary changes before delivering the eBlast to the recipients.
Each element displays its current value along with an Edit button that enables you to change it if necessary. Each row begins with a green check mark, indicating that each element has been completed. If the element requires your attention, a yellow warning Exclamation mark will appear.
The following are the elements and their current values:
- To
- From
- Subject
- Content (with Template Design, Monkey rewards, Email in plaintext option, Cards Social, and Test Email)
- Make your campaign known.
- Automatic Posting on Facebook
- Connection to Twitter through Auto Post
- Settings
- Tracking
At the upper right corner of the website, notice the Send Later schedule button next to the Send Now button. You may utilize the Send Later scheduling option to plan Campaigns that you can create ahead of time but send at a later date. We’ll send our eBlast manually and in real-time for the sake of this article. As a consequence, the functionality of scheduling will not be provided. Visit www.mailchimp.com for additional information on campaign scheduling.
