Even the book’s authorship is in question: Tony Schwartz was hired by the publisher to write the book and spent time with Trump, recording and analyzing his statements, but both say they had nothing to do with it, and Trump has threatened to sue Schwartz for his earnings. Schwartz has openly criticized the book, stating that if he were to rewrite it today, he would name it The Sociopath.
So far, everything has been hazy. Is it, however, an excellent or even pleasant book? The first thing to observe is that the book’s success formula is quite old, relying heavily on clichés like “dream big,” “know your market,” and other similar phrases.
In this regard, the book offers nothing that hasn’t already been said better in books like The Power of Positive Thinking and How to Win Friends and Influence People (or articulated in a similarly annoying manner in Think and Grow Rich, which may have affected Trump’s thinking indirectly).
Whether or not you appreciate the book is largely determined on how you feel about Trump. If you see him as a giant of business and a respectable president, or at the very least find his braggadocio bearable, then this book captures his narcissistic personality effectively, with most of it devoted to his meditations on his own accomplishments and virtues.
If, on the other hand, you find him repulsive and a symbol of all that is wrong with the world, you will find plenty of evidence to back up your suspicions.
The book is surprisingly candid about some of Trump’s early battles with zoning authorities, banks, and other roadblocks as he navigated the difficult path from millionaire to billionaire (the latter claim is subject to revision if we ever get chapter and verse on Trump’s finances – at the time of writing, he has released a financial disclosure form but his tax returns are stubbornly stuck down the back of his sofa).
As a consequence, the book doesn’t really teach readers how to negotiate since it relies primarily on the idea that you can achieve what you want via sheer force of personality.
However, if you are ready to overlook Trump’s more problematic characteristics, the book has some valuable insights to offer. From his obsessive interest in the fittings in Trump Tower to the way he micromanages subcontractors and his employees, you get a sense of his meticulous attention to detail.
His intense emphasis on each step of the process is reminiscent of many other successful entrepreneurs. Rather of thinking that staff can handle the little details, he attends every planning meeting and yells and stamps his feet if he believes he is not receiving enough effort and attention.
This is a business style that may not fit everyone, but it may be essential for individuals who want to start a firm from the ground up and have a visceral grasp of every aspect of it, from the nuts and bolts that hold it together to payroll, office furniture, and accounting systems.
While Trump might come out as penny-pinching (and has been strongly criticized over the specifics of some of his business dealings on that basis, among many other issues), it can’t be argued that he understands cost management, which is one of the most important aspects of any firm.
Trump is simple to criticize since he was the basis for Biff Tannen in Back to the Future. At the very least, it provides a picture of the kind of guy who can construct Trump Tower and the attendant corporate empire while also using sheer force of will to ascend to the White House.
